The board members of the Huntsville Girls Softball Association showed they were up to the challenge of organizing a large event over the weekend.
The organization hosted the USA Softball of Texas District 14 championship tournament, bringing in 15 to 17 youth teams to compete at Kate Barr Ross Park Saturday and Sunday.
HGSA president Jake Dixon said the organization had been looking forward to hosting a USA Softball tournament for a few years now.
“This is a hard tournament to get,” Dixon said. “It’s kind of a bright-lights championship tournament. We’ve been working hard to get everything ready to where we could host a championship-style tournament for a long time, and we finally pulled it off.
“My daughters, Mackenzie and Madeline, competed for years through Huntsville Girls Softball and we attended these district championships all over and I just didn’t see any reason why we couldn’t try to bring that to Huntsville. It was a far-fetched dream three or four years ago, but we’ve got good fields now that are in great shape. We have a good facility now that we can handle (a big tournament).”
Huntsville’s 6-and-under team, the Swing Queens, and 8-and-under squad, the Voltage, competed in the double-elimination event, but weren’t able to advance to the championship.
Because of all the rain Huntsville received Sunday, Willis Gold and the Montgomery Thunder were named co-champions of the 6-and-under bracket, while The Woodlands Force won the 8-and-under bracket.
Dixon said the tournament went smoothly despite the weather and hopes that HGSA will get the opportunity to host more USA Softball tournaments in the future.
“I want to thank the HGSA board profusely for their commitment to a good tournament,” Dixon said. “Everyone on the board went above and beyond to make sure the tournament went off successfully. When it was all said and done we were told it was one of the best district tournaments, as far as a hosting job, that they had ever seen.”
